Goa Temple Stampede: 6 Dead, 30 Injured at Shirgao Festival

Goa Temple Stampede: In a tragic turn of events, at least six people lost their lives and more than 30 sustained injuries in a stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao, North Goa, early Saturday morning. The mishap occurred during the annual Shirgao Jatra festival, which attracts thousands of devotees each year.

According to officials, the stampede broke out in the early hours while a large crowd was gathering at the temple. The festival, which began Friday, had drawn devotees from across Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, all eager to participate in the grand celebrations.

Law enforcement agencies had deployed about 1,000 police personnel, along with drone surveillance, to manage the massive turnout. Despite these arrangements, chaos erupted, leading to the deadly stampede. A police official confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.

State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane provided updates on the casualties, noting that eight people are in critical condition. Two of the seriously injured were shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim for advanced treatment. “Eight injured persons were admitted to the district hospital, while 10 others were treated for minor injuries,” Rane said.

Emergency services responded swiftly. “We coordinated with the 108 ambulance service, ensuring five ambulances reached the site immediately, while three more were stationed at the North Goa district hospital,” Rane added. To handle the crisis, extra medical staff were brought in, and an ICU equipped with ventilators was set up to provide intensive care.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the injured at the hospital and expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. He announced that a detailed inquiry has been ordered and promised that the report will be made public. Sawant also took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon. I visited the hospital and assured all possible support. Prime Minister Modi has also extended his support and is closely monitoring the situation.”

The Lairai Devi temple, famed for its unique blend of northern and southern architectural styles, hosts the Shirgao Jatra every May. One of the festival’s highlights is the traditional fire-walking ceremony, which draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over this year’s celebrations, raising serious questions about crowd management and safety protocols at large religious gatherings. While officials continue to investigate, the immediate focus remains on providing the best possible care to the injured and support to the bereaved families.
